TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP FOR WCHS - LESSON ONE

This is the first workshop for WCHS faculty members.  The title of it is Reaching the Top of Blooms with Free Online Web 2.0 Tools.  I hope you enjoy our time together and learn lots of possible ways to get your students to CREATE in whatever your subject area might be.  So let's get started!!!!

First of all you will need a blog.  Why?  Well all teachers need a personal, class blog or both.  This is an excellent way in which you can document things that go on in your classroom.  These are the times that we need evidence for our administrators and our evaluations.  This is one perfect way to do it.  You will also be using this blog to upload your assignments so that I can check them off as you complete this.  This will give us documentation or evidence of your having completed the workshop so that you will receive your three CEUs.

I have about seven blogs and they all serve different purposes such as one for my Art One class, one for my Advanced class, one for my personal artwork and international travel, one for my Arts and Technology class, etc.  So I'm asking you to create either a personal blog or one for your class.  I have writen a tutorial for you.  I hope it answers all of your questions.  Click on the link below in order to view the tutorial.

ASSIGNMENT ONE:

For your first assignment you will be doing a screencast.  A screencast is actually a movie of whatever happens on your computer screen.  It captures audio and limited video.  For this assignment we will be using one of two sites.  These sites are Screenr.com or Screencastomatic.com.  They are very similar but Screenr allows you to capture only five minutes while Screencastomatic allows you to capture fifteen.  Other than that they are basically the same.  So why would you want to capture what is going on on your computer screen?  I mainly use it for tutorials and videos.  Both sites allow for easy uploading to YouTube also.  As for my students doing screen captures, there is no better way to access someone's knowledge of a subject better than his CREATING a tutorial in which he teaches someone else.  You need a microphone in order to record the audio.  One is not necessary but it is better to use sound instead of having to type what is going on.

*I will ask you to register for a free account.  You don't have to have one but if you want to store your files on either site you must have an account.
*I will do a demonstration using Screencastomatic.com.
*We will have a discussion as to whether you could use screen captures or not.  We will also discuss what how you would use them.  How could students in your class use them?
*I will demonstrate how to import these screen captures into other programs such as PowerPoint or MovieMaker.
*You will be asked to CREATE your first screen capture. You might think about doing a tutorial that you can actually use in your class.
*Finally, I will demonstrate how you will upload your screen capture to your blog using HTML code.  Don't worry, it's not difficult.

SECOND ASSIGNMENT:

Why not learn to do podcasts or to be specific, phonecasts, with a site called Ipadio.com?  Do you have students that would rather talk than write?  Well Ipadio might be the site for you.  It's located at
http://ipadio.com/ and it states that you can broadcast live to the world from a phone call.  Well you really can and there is no limit to the length of the call and it's FREE.  Once you make your phlog, you can then very easily upload it to your blog and that's what we're going to do.

*I will demonstrate how to CREATE a phlog
*We will discuss how you might use them in your classroom
*You will register for a free account
*You will CREATE your first phlog
*You will upload it to your blog

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

If you did not have time to do your screencast and your phlog you will need to do them as homework.  Then they will both need to be uploaded to your blog so that I can mark these two assignments as completed.
